Soul Power Part 8
Some think the soul is "good" and the ego is "bad.” But this binary concept couldn't be further from the truth.
The soul came to earth to perfect itself. To that end, life tends to burn away its imperfections. The soul’s imperfections include that which must be resolved, healed, or transformed. The soul’s imperfections are either passed down from generations before or they are native to that particular soul.
Why are souls not already perfect? That is one of the most important theological questions of the ages. Genesis’s story of the Garden of Eden recounts that humankind was given a personal will (ego) that could choose to live either in its divine nature or in its egocentricity. By exercising its free will, the ego was to cooperate with the soul. This choice further potentiates the power of the Divine. If we had been created as robots, God could never be freely chosen by us.
As the Old Testament’s story goes, our choice to remain with God (in the garden) kept our ego and soul in harmony. But once the ego had a better idea and chose to break away from God, harmony was lost. “We” also lost contact with our true nature because we shifted from soul to ego.
But alas! The ego’s choices provide growing edges and challenges for the soul’s development -- challenges and passions that, when conquered, burn away that which prevents the soul’s progression. So, in a substantial way, the soul benefits from the ego by triumphing over its passions. When the ego finally submits to the soul, it becomes its biggest ally. The ego and the soul are not oppositional entities, but necessary partners.
Regardless of how much we live in ego, the soul is the only part of us that is true being and, in that respect, it remains tethered to the Divine.
Spiritual practice: Consider speaking with your ego and asking it if it would submit more to your soul. What are the answers it gives you?
Self-inquiry: Does my ego help my soul or does it oppose it?
Dear God,
Please be with me on my journey into wholeness. I pray for self-compassion when my egocentricity rears its head. And give me the courage to choose love instead of taking the path of least resistance. I pray that my ego befriends and serves my soul. Amen.
