Self-Care Part 7
Regardless of our Ego and Soul type, every one of us longs for affirmation. Without it, we cannot see our strengths, our contributions, or the impact we have on others. Yet some people appear not to need validation at all. They move through life in a closed system, seemingly untouched by others’ opinions or affections. However, in truth, most of us, from our first breath, need affirmation as profoundly as we need air.
Self-affirmation can be very healthy for us. To affirm ourselves creates good self-esteem. But the most objective and healing forms come from without. Affirmation can come from the kind gaze of another person, from a word of encouragement, from support and validation, from the trust of an animal, or from the Creator of our being.
What is Being?
Being is the ground of all reality—the sacred substance beneath all things. It is the essence that flows through every form, every thought, every experience. Pure Being reveals that all things share the same sacred source, that everything is interconnected in one vast, living organism. Being is non-dual: it is both still and alive, infinite and small. It is the quiet unity of the whole, shining through each of its manifestations.
Being is the essence of all that is, and it is expressed most fully in presence, right here and now. Yet many of us move through life sleepwalking, unaware of who we are, why we are here, and how deeply connected we are to every living thing. Actual Being is the opposite of sleepwalking or being busy on auto pilot. Actual Being is alert consciousness made radiant in the present moment.
How do we come to know our true Being—our essence?
The answer unfolds slowly. We discover it as we peel away all that is not essential and all that defines us only on the surface. Ask yourself:
Who am I when everything external that defines me is gone?
Who am I without my looks, my roles, my possessions, my relationships, my achievements?
When each of these is stripped away, what remains of me?
In that sacred space where all else falls away, we meet our essence. There, in the silence of the soul, we find our true self, the divine core that has always been.
To know our essence is to dive beneath ego and personality, beneath temperament and mental constructs, into the luminous depths of our Being. Here we glimpse upon our divine origin and our transcendent nature that is tethered to the Divine. From this awareness arises our most actual strength, our capacity to love, to heal, and to create.
When Jesus spoke the Beatitudes, he reached into the very core of human existence and affirmed our Being. Each of the nine Beatitudes is more than a blessing. They are nine divine affirmations. He blessed the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the humble, the merciful, the meek, the pure in heart, those whose hearts are pure, the peacemakers, and even those persecuted for righteousness and for speaking truth. Each is a blessing given to those who live from their essence.
Spiritual practice: Read chapter 17, “The Beatitudes” in Becoming Conscious. Which one speaks most deeply to your soul? Which Beatitude feels like God’s personal affirmation for you?
Self-inquiry: Where in your life do you most need affirmation—and why? What truth within you longs to be seen, heard, and blessed?
Prayer:
Dear God, Bless me, O God, and fill me again with the “Yes” You breathed into me at my making. Amen.
