Heaven-Sent Part 7

Our inner peace is heaven-sent. Of course, we must make room for it, ask for it, and protect it, but it is there. It is a real treasure in this noisy, hasty, demanding, and stressful world. I like to think the Creator placed a peaceful place inside each of us so we would never forget heaven’s peace. It is like a bit of heaven within. Some describe it as the Holy of Holies inside themselves; others, as the calm core at the very center of their being.

The soul has direct access to this inner calm. The ego, however, cannot create it or sustain it, though it endlessly tries. Ego offers us imitations or facsimiles: a sauna, a massage, soft music, singing bowls, a cottage by the lake, the beach, the mountains. These are good and restorative gifts, but they can only prepare the way. They are not the peace itself.

When there is constant turmoil within us, such as anxiety born of hatred, rejection, hurt, or misery, no outer circumstance alone can quiet it. Darkness, fear, limitation, or shame can veil the inner peace we were created with. And if we are surrounded by those who are determined to steal our peace or use us for their unhealthy agendas, peace remains out of reach. The ego may try to manufacture peacefulness with relaxation techniques, spas, scenery, food, or drink. But no matter how soothing, these can never provide the deep reservoir of inner calm that is the soul’s.

When ego serves the soul, however, it can help us descend to the spring of our lives regardless of the appearance of outer circumstances. It takes us to the genuine, tranquil presence beneath all things. This presence is not manufactured. It is revealed as we lift the veils that hide it from us. The more inner stillness we uncover, the more heaven-sent peace flows through us.

This serene tranquility can be compared to an inner lake, always calm and undisturbed. Though the storms and stressors of life may veil it, meditation, prayer, and stillness lift the clouds and reveal their placid depths. This lake of peace fills our minds, bodies, and hearts. To drink from it, we step aside from the noise, listen to our heartbeat, close our eyes and ears to the chatter, and sink into the stillness that restores us.

Guided meditation:

Find a comfortable position. Gently close your eyes and take a deep, gentle breath. Let the energy from Mother Earth enter you from your feet. Let the energy go upward to the crown of your head and back down your back. Now let your attention go to your heart. Focus on the source of light in your heart. Allow the light to fill every cell of your body.

Imagine before you a serene lake, its waters still and clear. This lake reflects your own inner calm, waiting beneath the veils of thought, worry, and distraction. Tethered to the Divine, the inner calm is accessible now.

With each breath, sense those veils lifting, layer by layer. Feel them dissolve as you move closer to the water’s edge. Even if your mind is restless, even if turmoil surrounds you, know that the lake is always present, just as the soul is always present.

Step into the water. Feel its coolness, its clarity embracing you. Let the lake renew you as you drink from it, as you swim in it, as you let its peace flow through every part of your being.

Remember: this calm is not found only in nature, but in the realization that you are part of its magnificence. You are one with its stillness, one with its peace.

Feel your gratitude for this heaven-sent sanctuary. When you are ready, gently take a deep breath and return to the present with soft eyes. Realize the serenity of the lake, will always be available within.

Spiritual practice: Try the self-guided meditation above. Imagine lifting the veils between you and the inner lake of peace within. What do you experience?

Self-inquiry: What would your life be like if you lived every moment from your inner, placid lake?

Prayer:

Dear God, my inner calm reveals what heaven must be like: all encompassing, steady, and full of equanimity. Thank you for endowing us with a little bit of heaven within. Amen.
