Who Do You Think You Are? Part 7
September 15, 2025
No one sees us exactly as we see ourselves. But as we live increasingly from our true nature, there is less of a gap between who we think we are, how others see us, and who we truly are.

Who do you think you are? It sounds like a simple question, yet it may be the most important one we ever consider. Some souls wander through life without ever truly knowing who they really are. They recognize they have a body, emotions, and a mind. Many even know that they have a soul. But few are consciously connected to many of their deeper qualities, so they cannot describe them.

I just listened to a great spiritual master leading a teaching to a global audience. This teacher is Daaji, the Global Guide for the Heartfulness movement based in Hyderabad, India. Today’s teaching was on meditation and human emotion. Daaji understands that regardless of how spiritually progressed we are, and how much meditation we have done over a lifetime, we are still human beings with human emotions. A common complaint of spiritual seekers is the following: “I have been working on myself for years and still let things upset me; I must not have developed as much as I think.” Daaji speaks to this common complaint:

I have noticed that most people feel they are good people. The research bears this out. Human beings think they are above average in being correct, honest, and reasonable (Alicke, 2005). However, research also shows that people feel less than others. Since the advent of social media, we can more readily measure how people stack up when they compare themselves to others. The results are that a large preponderance of people do not feel they compare well to others (Kayala, 2023).

Many of us define ourselves as our family defined us. Others of us find our identity for themselves. Many who are on the road to self-realization discover that we are infinite beings whose depth and potential are unlimited, so to nail down who we are is next to impossible. Our souls are infinite because as an aspect of God, they spring from the endless source of all being.

As a child, there were times when, like most kids, I was “too big for my britches.” Mama quickly corrected me by saying, “Just who do you think you are?” Her scolding usually brought me down to size. But the question, “Who do you think you are?” is not necessarily for scolding. It is an essential question that we face on the conscious or subconscious levels of our being. The question can be a sincere inquiry from another person about who we are. Or on a more profound level, we can ask ourselves by way of self-inquiry.

When we do not know what to do or where to turn, our spiritual practice is more essential than ever, because it helps us focus on listening for what we need. But there is another kind of listening, beyond the use of our two ears, called listening with our “third ear.”

When something upsets us, the first step toward spiritual wisdom is to step back from its emotional grip. Life inevitably brings circumstances that overwhelm us. Emotions rise like a tidal storm, tossing around our faith and flooding our minds with the problem. Emotions become the context for our mood, our body, and our spirit. In such moments, it can feel impossible to turn toward our spiritual practice, for the storm within us is too strong.

Many spiritual practices bring us closer to the Divine and to spiritual wisdom. One of my favorites is meditation. Some others are walking the labyrinth, consulting holy scripture, Lectio Divina, yoga, pilgrimage, dance, writing, music, practicing presence, mindfulness, embodiment, and various forms of prayer. However, none will be optimal unless we bring several things to the practice.

Our soul child, our essence, is possibly the most open and receptive aspect of our soul. Being receptive is essential in receiving divine wisdom. As we go around the Enneagram learning the truth of each point, when we get to point five, we reach Sacred Wisdom, which includes our being transparent to Divine Wisdom. Transparencies allow light to pass through so that objects behind can be seen. One of the characteristics of the non-egoic soul child is their unobstructed perception of the other side. They use transparency all the time. The soul child may experience veils between themselves and reality, but the veils are transparent. In full ego, the veils are thick and heavy.

When I think I have reached a certain level of awareness, something can happen, and my reaction to it throws me back into the first grade of spiritual growth. Feeling my clay feet is not a pleasant experience, but those times remind me of my limitations and the need to keep growing.

One day last week, as I often do, I could not solve a problem on my own. And none of the solutions I collected from others seemed to feel right. What was I do? What are any of us to do when in a situation like that? I felt like a teenager who knew something about the problem, but I did not have enough divine wisdom to make the decision.
Peace Part 8
September 1, 2025
The peace in our hearts comes from having enough love to melt away anything that threatens to disturb it. To live in that peace, we must continually fill our hearts with love, overflowing.

When I was a little boy, I loved to climb trees. The higher I climbed, the better it was.
The higher in the tree I climbed, the more limber were its branches, and the more of a “ride” I could get. Not only could I see my rooftop, but I also spied all the neighbors’ roofs and yards. Up there, swaying in the tree, I was one with its branches and moved with the limbs in concert with the wind.
Peace Part 6

When you are not peaceful, do you operate at your best? Probably not. Research shows that our thinking becomes less sharp when we are disturbed, preoccupied, or weighed down by fears, worries, and anxieties. A small amount of anxiety can heighten alertness, but when peace is fundamentally lost, our ability to process information drops and our reaction time increases.
Peace Part 5
August 29, 2025
Over the many years of treating wonderful people who have anxiety disorders, I found that by far, their anxiety was significantly reduced when they felt an overwhelming amount of love and self-confidence. We are scared and anxious when we feel we do not have the resources to meet our challenges. We think we will be a failure, unworthy, or be made a fool of, taken advantage of, criticized, or “fired.” Or we may feel that we will have a huge loss we cannot cope with, or a massive change in our lives we are unprepared to make. But most of all, we do not feel loved the way we need to feel it or love ourselves the way we need to. This collapses our self-worth and belief in ourselves.
