Wholeness Part 3

Having everything we need, and being everything we are, is wholeness. But so many times, we do not realize that we have what we need and that we are complete as we are. So many times, we feel insufficient, damaged, and not enough. We feel unwhole. Without feeling whole, we are more susceptible to hopelessness. But the good news is we can rediscover our wholeness that was there all along and live from it. Our wholeness is a gift bestowed on us at our making—it never goes away. We can spend our entire lives unaware of it or forgetting it. Or we can embody and live from it.

The key to rediscovering our wholeness and living from it instead of living in lack and inferiority is our spiritual practice. In such a spiritual practice, we revisit our acceptability, our preciousness, and, most of all, our inner divine selves, the Beloved. This is not our ego’s image of who we are. It is not a review of our accomplishments, even the altruistic ones. This daily spiritual practice is not an assessment of how many people we serve or like us. It is an honest acceptance of ourselves when the smoke blows away, when the clouds open to the blue sky, and when our breath is full and deep.

This acceptance includes our divine self as well as our shadow side— the things about us that we are not readily in touch with… the shameful and even wonderful things we may not know, or that we may deny. Nevertheless, all aspects of ourselves are part of our wholeness.

Over the years, I have been privileged to spend sacred time with dear souls working on their lives and relationships; it was not as much their proficiencies but their growing edges that made them whole. The same is true for me, and I suspect it is for you. Without our challenges, who would we be? Without our deficits, what would we need to learn? Without asking to realize our divine selves and that we have all we need, how would there be redemption?

It is a mistake to judge ourselves as flawed and incomplete simply because we have deficiencies. Our deficiencies and how we deal with them make us whole. We may be broken, but our blessing makes us whole.

Spiritual practice: Meditate on what you perceive as your shortcomings. What arises? How have they served you in any way? What have they healed in you?

Self-inquiry: What deficiency has most brought you into the realization of your wholeness?

Prayer:

Dear God, Instead of getting down on myself for not being enough, I thank you for the things that need to be healed in me. And I pray to love these things rather than alienate them. I pray to love myself and know that I have everything I need for this journey. Amen
