The Heart Center of Intelligence Part 1

Join us for this week’s reflections on “The Heart Center of Intelligence.”

All our lives we have heard to follow our hearts, but what if we did? The heart is a powerful force in our being. So, if we follow it, we are open to its emotions and pulls. But decisions made on emotion alone may be in error.

The heart’s emotions fed by the unchecked ego are convincingly strong. This means that emotions born of the ego’s fears or desires can hijack our emotion and misdirect us. But if the heart’s emotions are fed by the soul, they are rooted in love. The soul’s love carries essential emotions which brilliantly guide us and express the love of God. Our challenge is to be so connected to the soul that we can discern the origins of our emotions: Are they born of the ego, or the soul?

When the heart’s emotions are rooted in our soul, they cannot be ignored. These emotions are reliable because they come from our true nature, tethered to the Divine. The soul’s energy, through our heart’s emotions, activates the Virtues of humility, truthfulness, equanimity, detachment, courage, sobriety, innocence, diligence, and serenity. If your heart expresses one or more of the virtues, it is inestimably linked to the soul. This means that our emotions, regardless of what they are, are rooted in love. That makes all the difference.

Dropping into the heart and soul, we have the power of soul discernment. This happens when we are quiet, in stillness, and far from distractions. Sometimes another person must help us drop into our heart and soul. They’re a guide and friend who will not judge but supports us as we move into our heart and feel what is there.

Spiritual practice: Have you ever been misdirected by powerful emotions? What are some ways you can inspect your emotions before they take you in a direction you may not want to go?

Self-inquiry: Is your heart ruled most by your ego or soul? Are your ego and soul partners or do they fight?

Prayer:

Dear God, My heart is full to overflowing. It overflows from my soul. Yet I confess that many times I have been ridden with feelings from a hurt or inflated ego. I pray for connection to my depths and the feelings which flow from my soul. Amen.
