Sometimes we are not fully aware of the gifts that are given to us every day—the specific gifts we need to solve a problem or meet a challenge. But we receive them each day. Here is the way to find out some of your gifts for today.

The first thing to do is to review your day and recall what experience was most challenging. What was that challenge’s effect on you? Were you frightened, frustrated, angry, confused, overwhelmed, or discouraged? What did you believe you needed in that moment?

Now, in retrospect, recall how the issue was resolved. What strengths in yourself did you access to deal with this challenge? What people came into the situation that made it possible to negotiate the dilemma? What conditions appeared unexpectedly that contributed to the resolution? Did you receive a moment of grace? Or a conversation that healed you in some way?

Today brought its ordinary share of challenges. But as I looked back over the day, I realized that almost every challenge had been met by a gift.

In a moment of self-doubt, I received affirmation from someone I respect and love.

In confusion, I received clarity from an insight that came to me out of nowhere.

In wondering how someone I love is doing, the phone rang, and it happened to be that person.

In working physically hard, I received strength from, of all things, music.

On the phone with a “representative,” I needed patience, and after much frustration, it came.

In a moment of deep grief, I was lifted out of the depths by overflowing love beyond myself.

Inquiry

What might make you say to yourself that your gifts were simply coincidences?

Prayer

Dear God, for all my gifts today, I am so grateful.

Amen
