The False Self Part 4
The false self is part of our ego structure. It sometimes helps us, and sometimes, it deludes us. But in the quest for consciousness, we go through the process of amalgamating our ego, including our false self, and soul. But what is the process of amalgamation, and how do we achieve it? Amalgamation is the union between our ego and our soul. The prerequisite for amalgamation is that the ego first submits to the soul.
The ego’s submission to the soul is not an easy process. Our egos have been in charge for years and years. As the seat of power, it has made most of our decisions. It has also made many mistakes, and because of that, has gained a lot of wisdom through suffering. When the ego sustains a critical mass of wisdom as well as a critical mass of suffering, all the elements are there for it to give up its command. But to whom does the ego relinquish its command? It is the soul. So, the ego and the soul cooperate in a holy union for the survival of our being.
A long time ago in our lives, a similar agreement was reached between the ego and the soul, but the roles were reversed. We were soul children then, and there was no way we could continue to exist as pure and innocent beings. The world inundated us with demands, ultimatums, and wounds. The world was determined to whip us into shape by flattering or forcing us to change. In either case, we got the strong message we were not OK the way we were. Our holding environment no longer held us. We didn’t know what to do. So, the soul child submitted to the ego and allowed it to take over simply to help us survive and move through the world. The ego gave us protection, an image, and a way to move in the world without fear of being destroyed. It was a mental defense structure that worked for us for decades.
But in adulthood, the ego has reached a critical mass of suffering, so in the spirit of “turn about is fair play,” the suffering ego enlists the soul to relieve its pain. When this occurs, the ego begins the life-long process of alchemically combining with the soul. The soul accepts the ego, its faults, and its hard-won wisdom and subsumes it wholly into itself. This process creates a holy union between two vital aspects of ourselves that had heretofore been, for the most part, operating independently.
Because of amalgamation, every decision and every behavior are brought before the soul in consciousness awareness. And the soul, not the ego alone, has the final say in our behaviors and decisions. The ego becomes part of the soul. This doesn’t mean that the ego stops its ego-centric leanings. Instead, it means even though the ego is all about the self, because of the process of amalgamation, it says, “But now I serve the soul and defer to it.”
Spiritual practice: If you had to say who calls the shots, would it be your ego or soul?
Self-inquiry: What do you have to lose by submitting to the soul?
Dear God,
Please guide me in reaching my wholeness, for in you, I am healed. Amen
