Deep Dive Part 6

We have all had seasons, times, and instances of introspection. We delve deeper into our own lives to see what is going on with ourselves

Introspection is much like reflection, yet its gaze turns inward. The word “introspection” comes from the Latin specere, meaning “to look or observe,” preceded by intro, meaning “within.” Together, they invite us to “look within.”

Every act of introspection is an opportunity to take a deep dive and examine how we are doing, what motivates us, what we are learning, and the results of our efforts. Some dismiss introspection as unhealthy self-absorption, and it can be. But it can also be a courageous search for truth when done with the sincere need to know ourselves

There are two primary kinds of introspection: egoic and spiritual. We all engage in both. Egoic introspection revolves around the ego’s story. It asks such question as: Do others see me as I want to be seen? Am I making my ego story come true? What must I do to feel loved and in control? It replays moments, imagines futures, and measures success by appearances. Egoic introspection is not wrong, but when it is our only form of self-examination, we remain trapped in the ego’s shallow pool, unable to reach spiritual depth.

Spiritual introspection, on the other hand, seeks truth. It looks at our behavior, relationships, and attitudes through the lens of spiritual growth. It shows us where we struggle, heal, and awaken. Only the soul, not the ego alone, can observe us with compassion and truthfulness. The more truth we seek, the deeper we dive into our spirit.

We will continue tomorrow with a closer look at spiritual introspection.

Spiritual practice: Take a quiet moment now to go within. What arises? Are you viewing your life through the eyes of ego or through the eyes of your soul? Try seeing yourself with your soul’s gentle gaze and notice what changes.

Self-inquiry: Can you distinguish between your egoic and spiritual introspection? What part of you recognizes that difference?

Prayer:

Dear God, As I go deeper into myself, grant me courage and self-compassion. Amen.
