Prosperity Part 6

There are many different kinds of prosperity. But all kinds can be reduced to one essential property: a thriving life. Many rich and famous people embody the condition of being prosperous. Take Elon Musk who thrives in business and is arguably the richest man on the planet. Take Taylor Swift who thrives with talent, riches and mega-fame. And take the leading people in your community— the ones voted into office, or who own businesses and corporations. They thrive as leaders with much life force, material resources, and recognition. These are truly prosperous people.

But prosperity is not confined to those with power, riches, and fame. Many people who have little of these still have thriving lives. They are prolific in their work, their family life, their talents and their enthusiasm for life itself! You and I know these people. They may live down the street or next door. Found everywhere and in all strata of life, these souls have thriving lives but no appreciable power, fame or great wealth like the rich and famous. They are like beehives, continuously teeming with the life force. They brim over with passion for life itself.

There is another type of prosperity enjoyed by gangsters, terrorists, dealers on the dark web, murderers, thieves, and the like. Even though they operate without respect for others or a moral code, many seem to thrive. So, prosperity and the thriving life that makes it so, are not confined to the salt of the earth people, or to the famous, powerful, and rich. Prosperity is not only that which is received as a blessing; it lands on those who lie, cheat, steal, and kill. Prosperity, like life itself, is not fair. It is there for anyone at any time, whether it is worked for, schemed, strategized, or falls into the person’s lap.

I once knew a dear family who lives comfortably but thought they were deprived. They portrayed themselves as down and out and said that the only way out of their misery was winning the lottery. They made frequent trips over the state line to buy lottery tickets. The lottery was their only hope, and each time they didn’t win was another reason to complain about their hard luck. On the other hand, I know another family with much less materially than the first family I described. But they have prosperity. Always going, doing, and involved in their hobbies and groups, their love of life is contagious. They do not complain about their modest home or feel bitter toward those who have more. They are so filled with the interests and excitement of life that the condition of lack is not on their radar.

So taking everything into consideration, what is the best type of prosperity? That question can be answered only by asking it of ourselves.

Spiritual practice: Take stock of who you think is prosperous. Why are they?

Self-inquiry: What is the best type of prosperity?

Prayer: Dear God, I pray to thrive in expressing the qualities of my soul. Amen
