Prosperity Part 5

When I was in eighth grade, my science project was on the theory of audiotropism, also called phonotropism, which is the effect of sound on the growth of plants. I planted three pans of soil with winter rye grass. One pan was exposed to rock and roll music (WABB on my little transistor radio) for two hours daily. Another pan was exposed to slow music (WALA) for two hours daily. The third pan of grass had no exposure to music at all.

All the pans were kept in the same window and watered equally. Guess what happened? For some unknown reason, the rock and roll pan of grass grew twice as tall as the other two. The grass that was grown to slow music came in a distant second, and the no-music grass showed the least growth.

As an eighth grader, I had no scientific proof that rock and roll music caused more growth. And my scientific design might have had some glaring flaws, but my hypothesis was that vibrations must have stimulated the seeds, and then the cells, keeping the grass in “growth mode.” That simple project taught me something valuable: vibration affects growth.

I believe the same principle applies to prosperity, which is also a form of growth. We do not prosper when exposed to inhibiting vibrations, but we do prosper when exposed to vibrations that stimulate growth. Vibrations can be high or low. Lower vibrations are often negative and unconscious, while higher vibrations are more positive and conscious.

As I grew older, I noticed the same principle at work in people. Those who let their inner light shine carried a vibration that lifted me, and I wanted to be around them. They did things that increased their light. They were around positive people and engaged in positive and uplifting things. I learned to avoid opening up to those who seemed to have a darkness or heaviness about them. In my mind, there were high-vibration people and low-vibration people. And there were, of course, those whose vibrations changed according to the situation.

Today, many years after that little science project, I believe the lesson still holds: higher vibrations stimulate us in positive ways, while lower or stagnant vibrations can deplete us. This is why we need the high vibrations of positive people and situations. But the highest vibration of all is that of the Divine. In my life’s work, seeking out people with high vibrations has been essential. I need friends and associates who send out higher vibrations. My daily work is often with those who struggle with disturbances, which contributes to their low vibrations. Only the higher vibrations can help heal them. This is why I try to take in as many higher vibrations as possible. When my own vibrations are low, I need positive others, and most of all, the sustaining vibration of the Divine.

Spiritual practice: What do different vibrations do for you? Try visiting someone trained in sound healing with singing bowls. Sit for one of their sessions and notice how your body, mind, and soul respond to the vibrations.

Self-inquiry: What do you sense is your own vibration?

Prayer: Dear God, Your vibrations lift me up, and for that I am deeply grateful. Amen.
