Heaven-Sent Part 5
Why would we need or want something that is heaven-sent? Don’t we already have enough on this side of heaven? Isn’t the world sufficient without anything else coming from above? Aren’t the goodness, mercy, compassion, and love in our hearts enough to see us through?
Some believe this is the case. Take Deists, for example. They have always thought that God created the world, set it to run like a clock, and stepped back without any further involvement. They hold that a moral life built on the virtues is enough to supply the world with what it needs. For them, the world is self-contained.
Some others say that heaven may exist, but they neither see nor look for its presence here on earth. Finally, some think that the world is all there is and that there is no heaven or divine creator.
Many of us, including myself, do not think the physical world by itself is enough. Yes, it is breathtakingly beautiful and abundant. It has infinite discoveries and riches. But to honestly know the world is to sense its essence. Just as we are the out-picturing of our essence, the earth is the out-picturing of the Great Essence, the Divine. Because of that, earth and heaven are one in the same, inseparable. Heaven and earth are, in fact, mirror images of each other. It is only the ego that tries to separate them.
Jesus knew that many people see physical world as a closed system, but he understood that heaven and earth were joined, and that, through consciousness, we could bring heaven into this plane. This could be done by becoming aware that the kingdom of heaven is within us. He said we can enter the kingdom of heaven at any present moment and that the kingdom nurtures and supplies us. While Jesus did not say the popular phrase “As above, so below,” his teaching predated that phrase. In the Lord’s Prayer, he said, “On earth as it is in heaven.”
So, something heaven-sent is not from another place. It is already here and corresponds to its source in heaven. But we grasp this only when conscious that earth is not all there is— that it is more than what first appears. The totality of being is both realms and the thin space between them. Once we see what is from above, we know it is heaven-sent.
Spiritual practice: What can you see now that is heaven-sent?
Self-inquiry: Why might it take time to become conscious of that which is heaven-sent?
Prayer:
Dear God, I pray for eyes to see and ears to hear all that heaven sends. Amen.
