Sacred Pilgrimage Part 2

The next thing you must do, but cannot easily do, can become a pilgrimage. How can that be? Because anything that asks courage of us can become an adventure in faith.

Take the simple yet daunting task of having a difficult conversation with someone. Most of us know that feeling. We dread it. We postpone it. It hangs over us like a cloud we hope might drift away on its own. But what if that moment is not a burden at all? What if it is a pilgrimage?

A pilgrimage carries us from one place to another, yet the path is rarely clear. The road is uncertain. The outcome is unknown. What makes it a pilgrimage is not the destination—it is the faith with which we begin the journey.

When the once-dreaded conversation is placed within the sacred container of a pilgrimage, something changes. We are no longer trying to control the outcome. Instead of being in charge, we become a guest on the journey. Our words begin to come from a deeper place. Our actions arise from a spirit of surrender. We entrust the unfolding moment to a wisdom greater than our own, and we watch as the path reveals itself step by step.

The next thing you must do, but cannot quite bring yourself to do, may not be an obstacle at all but an opportunity to travel a different road in a conversation… a road that we do not know, a road that is revealed only one step at a time. Once our intention is to make a pilgrimage, we are in a holy container. Our conversation, regardless of how difficult it may be, aligns with divine love in that container. That love makes our words part of Sacred Action.

Spiritual practice: What is a difficult conversation or a challenge you must deal with? Try placing it inside the container of a pilgrimage journey.

Self-inquiry: What would prevent you from making a challenge into a pilgrimage?

Prayer:

Dear God, For this next pilgrimage, I call upon Your name. Amen.
