The Present Moment and the Enneagram Part 7
Simply put, presence to the moment is like dropping water on a Chia Pet—a “toy” pet with actual grass on its back. When the flat grass is watered, it perks right up and stands on end, to resemble the pet’s fur.
Sometimes our perceptions grow limp and lifeless because they are deprived of the spiritual water they need. But when we water the present moment with our presence, we become fully alive. The vivid moment and our soul come alive when we are present.
A spiritually alchemical process, being present is relatively easy. To live in the now, we simply pay attention only to right here, right now, by feeling our bodies, by dropping into our hearts, and by clearing the mind. The ego cannot take over if we keep our attention on our bodies, hearts, and minds as they feel in this present moment.
Presence is a powerful way to go against our arrows to reach our soul. In presence, we perceive the way to proceed, the truth we must speak, and the reality of others. Our ego distances us from others and from reality, but in presence we are close to both of these.
Spiritual Practice
Drop into your heart. Feel your emotions. Let equanimity come into your heart’s emotions. Clear your mind of distractions through a spiritual practice such as prayer or meditation. Feel how an undistracted mind creates a feeling of spaciousness. In spaciousness, be aware of your body and relax it. Now be aware of your body’s messages: is it speaking to you? What does it say? What is it like for you to be living in this now?
Inquiry
What happens to my mind, body, and heart when my attention is on the now?
Prayer
Dear God, in your Holy of Holies of the present, I bow to you in thanksgiving. Like living waters that give me new life, may I dwell in you. Amen.
