The Gifts of the Day Part 4
September 4, 2026
Gifts come to us every day, whether we realize it or not. Sometimes we are so distracted, anxious, or overwhelmed that it is impossible to detect them on our radar, much less recognize them when they are “delivered.” But that does not mean we do not need them. In fact, sometimes we need them desperately.
We may not know what gift we need—we only know that we need something super-helpful in this moment: something to give us comfort, soothe our pain, reveal an answer, or make a way when there seems to be no way forward. When we reach such a place, we need to stop and take a breath.
In that moment we may notice not only what is happening to us, but also how we are responding to it. Then we can begin to recognize any ingrained, familiar pattern that keeps leading us through the same responses, the same answers, and, in the end, the same pain. When we stop and become aware of these self-defeating patterns, we arrive at a vital point of illumination. We awaken to the reality that our familiar ways of coping are defeating us and that we need a gift greater than what we can manufacture.
This is when we can ask for one gift above all: the ability to move above our pain, if even for a sacred minute, to recognize the gifts already sent to us today. The request can come in a simple prayer:
Dear God,
You know my needs today. You understand my hopes and fears. You know my pain. I pray for a gift today—a gift that reminds me that hope is essential to life, and that my fears pale in comparison to Your love. Amen
Spiritual Practice
On a day when you cannot recognize its gifts, but you know you need them, you may want to offer a prayer similar to the one above. Ask for the grace to see what your fear, pain, or preoccupation may be preventing you from seeing and receiving.
Inquiry
When you are hurting or afraid, what familiar patterns keep you from stopping and seeing what you truly need? What might help you interrupt those patterns? And what gift—within you, around you, or from God—might you need most?
