The Fire Within Part 5

"Come, Holy Spirit, and kindle in us the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, and we shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth."

These words are, in themselves, a profound prayer for transformation.

For centuries, Christians have prayed this invocation, calling upon the Holy Spirit to enter their lives and renew them from within. The prayer is rooted in the ancient hymn Veni Sancte Spiritus ("Come, Holy Spirit"), a beloved Pentecost prayer whose origins reach back to the Middle Ages. Though its author remains unknown, its power has endured through the generations.

The imagery is striking. The Holy Spirit is not described as a personality, concept, or an idea, but as fire.

Throughout scripture, fire symbolizes the transforming presence of God. Moses encountered God in the Burning Bush. The Israelites were guided through the wilderness by a Pillar of Fire. At Pentecost, tongues of fire descended upon the disciples, filling them with courage, wisdom, and the ability to speak in languages they had never learned.

Even the disciples on the road to Emmaus recognized Christ's presence only after He disappeared from their sight. Looking back on the encounter, they asked one another:

"Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road?"

The fire of the Holy Spirit is not elusive; it is transformative. Like a refining fire, it burns away what is false, fearful, or unnecessary. It illuminates what is true. It awakens what has fallen asleep. It gives life where there has been stagnation and hope where there has been discouragement.

The Holy Spirit is the active presence of Divine love moving within us and through the circumstances of our lives. Yet there is a mystery here: we cannot control the Spirit. We cannot direct its work or predict its outcome. Our role is to invite it, then to follow it.

The power does not belong to us. But the invitation does.

When we pray, "Come, Holy Spirit," we are opening ourselves to a force of transformation greater than our own will. We are saying “yes” to whatever renewal God desires to bring.

That is an act of faith.

Spiritual Practice

Is there something within you that longs to be transformed? Is there someone you love who is struggling? Is there a circumstance that seems stuck, broken, or beyond your ability to change?

Bring it before the Divine and pray:

"Come, Holy Spirit, and kindle in us the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, and we shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth."

Then release the outcome and trust the Spirit to do its work.

Inquiry

What part of you does not hesitate to pray this prayer?

Prayer

Dear God,

For the transforming presence of your Holy Spirit, I am deeply grateful. May I become more aware of its fire burning within me—purifying, illuminating, and renewing my life. Give me the courage to welcome your Spirit wherever it wishes to lead.

Amen
