Essential Aspects and the Wisdom of the Ancient Enneagram Part 7

She was pregnant and about to deliver at any time. Her name was Magnolia and she was our sweet little cocker spaniel. At one point, the vet said she was not pregnant. But Magnolia had different ideas and delivered five healthy little cocker spaniels. The newborn litter was a fabulous delight for our family. Why are births so joyful?

Birth reminds us of the continuation of life. It shows us that our losses are, in some inestimable way, being replaced by other emerging expressions of love. Birth attests to the fact that we are part of an amazing, self-renewing, and eternal flow. Birth brings us hope.

Birth is experienced in many ways, not only by the live birth of animals and humans, but in the birth of ideas, the birth of works of art, the births of running for and being elected to office, the births of new friendships, of new activities, of new adventures. When we feel a deficit in life, all we have to do is remember our connection to birth and how new life springs up in us in many ways.

Like our dog Magnolia showed us, despite what others may say, new life is always waiting to be born in us.

Spiritual practice: Describe a birth in your life and how it inspired you.

Self-inquiry: What in you wants to be born?

Prayer:

Dear God, Birth is an essential aspect of life. If you had not formed us and placed the seed of our life in us at our making, we would be only ideas. I pray for continued birth and rebirth. And I pray that our inherent connection to birth inspires the people of our world to reach beyond any current dilemma.  Amen.
