The Body’s Intelligence Part 7
Pope John Paul II said, “The human body includes, right from the beginning, the capacity of expressing love, that love in which the person becomes a gift — and by means of this gift — fulfills the meaning of his being and existence.”
How true we know this to be, especially when we hold a newborn baby. The baby’s vulnerability, its need to be held, and its complete receptivity to love are its ways of saying, “I am here, I need you, your embrace, your words, your kisses — and in my own way I give you love too.” Yes, from the very beginning it is all about love — the love of the Creator revealed in our very bodies. Fresh from heaven, there was no separation between our soul and our body which expressed love totally and unconditionally.
We came to earth as pure love and soul. We knew no difference between our souls and the God who sustained us. Unless we were born in terribly adverse circumstances, we were held by the universe and nurtured by it. But as life unfolded, we realized the world would not love us and hold us like it did when we were very young. In school and in the family, we had to grapple with difficult expectations, punishments, and rejection that marred our original bliss. And to survive, we looked out for number one with our soul taking a back seat. So, we suppressed our little bodies from their Holy Union and gravitated to our ego mind’s strategies to protect us from the world. Our bodies then became agents of our ego minds. When we return to our soul, we become conscious once more of the Holy Union between our bodies and the Divine.
Spiritual practice: Ask your soul child what wounded it so much that you had to disconnect from it.
Self-inquiry: Why is my body more than flesh?
Dear God,
As I grow closer to you, I ask to be closer to the truths about you that my body reveals. I pray that my body expresses those truths. In communion with you, I realize that my body is one with you again. Amen.
