The Body’s Intelligence Part 3

To further align with the Divine, our bodies can assume a divine position. This has been done in Yoga for centuries. The divine positions in Yoga are called asana. Each position mirrors an aspect of humanity's relationship with nature and the Divine. And then there are other positions from the Hindu and Buddhist traditions called mudras which, like asana, represent a certain posture of the hands or the total body. In the Enneagram community, there are mudras which stand for each of the nine Enneagram types.

Our body’s position can reflect the current state of our ego or that of our soul. For example, in genuine prayer we may lie prostrate before the Divine, put our hands together with our fingers pointing upward or simply bow our heads. By doing these, our body aligns with the soul and becomes a conduit for divine energy. On the other hand, when our body solely expresses our ego state, it expresses the passions of the false self. An example is the passion of anger reflected by the body’s rigid stance, by grimacing, or making a fist. The body can also express the false self in facial expressions, as we flatter others, become slothful, or envious. However, when the ego and soul are amalgamated, the body reflects the ego’s submission to the soul, our true nature, our most authentic self.

Spiritual practice: The next time you pray, notice the position of your body and what it may be expressing from your soul.

Self-inquiry: How does your body express from ego and from soul? How does it blend the two in a healthy way?

Dear God,

I pray to express from my soul. I do not want my false self to be in charge. Amen.
