The Miraculous Part 5

How do we find the miraculous? Most days feel fairly typical, don’t they? And even on unusual days, our attention is captured by whatever demands the most of us. Most inner radars rarely pick up the miraculous, but our radar’s alertness to the miraculous can be sensitized.

Yes, some miracles seize us at once because they are dramatic, sudden, otherworldly, and for some reason or another, are impossible to ignore. But many of them are far more subtle. They emerge out of stillness. They rise quietly from the present moment. They whisper. They are expressed in nature, in coincidences, in sudden insights, in altered states of consciousness, or under other circumstances.

If we genuinely want to see miracles in any day, we must open ourselves to them. We must develop an inner alertness, a readiness. And most of all, we must be eager to see it. Without this yearning, we look only through the narrow lens of the egoic self. The unhealthy ego scans life for what will further its own agenda. Its tunnel vision sees only what satisfies its aims, and nothing more.

This is why we must ensure that our search for the miraculous is not fueled by ego. Some people seek miracles to make themselves appear special, to add another notch to their belt of unique experiences, or to impress others with their “miraculous” stories. But if they are ego-manufactured, these are not miracles. Others look for miracles to satisfy a craving for constant reassurance that a higher power is taking care of them. And others seek them as distractions from inner pain. And some are so fixated on the unseen, such as ghosts, spirits, and the like, that their search is merely an extension of an obsession. Truly, the ego can hijack almost anything.

But the sincere search for the pure miraculous comes from a heart of spiritual desire, which is the longing for wisdom, for healing, for wholeness, and ultimately for union with the Divine. Such a seeker continually asks things like the following:

“What is the message in this?”

“How is the Divine present in this circumstance, this outcome?”

“What is this experience saying to me?”

“How can I meet this moment with a heart open to God?”

“Why did these things happen at the same time?”

“Why did they call, the moment I thought about them?”

They even ask in difficult moments:

“What miracles might be hidden in what seems dark or painful?”

“What is this experience of divine proportion nudging me to do—or not do?”

“Why did these events unfold in this exact sequence, with these exact people?”

“And why did nature reveal to me precisely what I just witnessed?

This is the heart that perceives the miraculous. The veils disappear, and our hearts align with the Divine.

Spiritual practice: Reflect on the miraculous in your life. Write your theology of the miraculous.

Self-inquiry: How alert are you to the miraculous in each day? Consider focusing on the miraculous one entire day. Do you see more Divine activity than you usually see?

Prayer

Dear God, Show me more of the miraculous. I yearn for it. Make me worthy to receive it. Amen
