Seeing Things Part 7
In reflecting on the soul, I believe it sees, understands, and senses things that the ego cannot. The soul does this through the heart connection which is a spiritual ability, whereas the ego’s instinct is predominantly a survival-based ability. Though the intuitive functions of our ego are vital, we can develop an extra sensing ability by enlisting the power of the soul.
For example, if someone wants us to enter into a contractual relationship, and our ego tells us to be wary of the contract, it’s time for the soul to step in. The soul has a powerful way of removing fear, shame, and anger from the equation and letting us see the relationship in terms of the spiritual bottom line. The soul is not hasty or self-absorbed. The soul sits with the relationship, the arrangements between the two people, and the truth.
It sits with all the possibilities and considers what is best for everyone. Slowly but surely, the ego’s strivings are seen as separate from the strivings of the soul. Some things are “no-brainers” to the ego, and when we live only in the ego, we tend to go with what it approves of. However, the soul sees the issues differently from the ego. The eyes of the soul are compassionate and everyone’s concerns are considered.
The soul simply sits with the issues until it perceives the arising truth. The soul may concur with the ego’s choice, or it may offer a higher way. The soul makes its inclinations known not in logic alone but by impressions seen by our hearts, as we contemplate all that arises. “Sitting” doesn’t always mean being at rest. Instead, it means that in our work, reflection, study, action, and play, the issue sits in the crucible of the soul.
Spiritual practice: Try placing a current dilemma in the crucible of your soul. As you go through this process, journal your thoughts about what your soul sees.
Self-inquiry: Why would you resist sitting with an undecided issue until the truth arises?
