Reflection Part 5
Sometimes, spiritual reflection opens the door to transformation and healing. The following spiritual practice offers a set of questions that can guide this process. It is based on Gestalt Psychology, Jungian Psychology, Core Transformation, Embodiment, the Enneagram’s Centers of Intelligence and soul qualities, Neurolinguistic Programming, and Rational Emotive Therapy.
This practice unfolds in three segments.
Segment One offers questions to help you identify and reflect on an unwanted feeling.
Segment Two invites you to work with your answers and discover what transformation may be possible.
Segment Three guides you in shifting the energy toward healing and integration.
You may do this exercise alone or have a trusted person gently guide you by asking the questions in order. Allow yourself time to sit with whatever arises… thoughts, sensations, and emotions. Be sure to notice the memories and experiences that come forward.
Segment One: Questions
Do I have feelings I do not want?
What is one of these unwanted feelings?
How is this feeling disturbing me?
Where in my body do I feel it?
How would I describe it? (For example: heavy, burdened, empty, scared, etc.)
Why do I not want this feeling?
When do I usually experience it?
What likely caused it?
What purpose might it serve?
What belief of mine sustains this feeling and keeps it alive?
What do I tell myself would happen if I let it go?
To release it, what soul qualities, virtues, or Holy Ideas could replace it?
Where in my body do I sense these soul qualities?
Segment Two: Discovering Transformation
Sit comfortably and bring awareness to the location of the unwanted feeling in your body. Ask the feeling if it would leave if you replaced it with something that could meet its needs and concerns.
If it agrees, move your attention to the place where the soul qualities are located in your body. Ask these soul qualities if they are willing to come forward and take action to heal and replace the unwanted feeling. If they agree, you are ready for the final step.
Segment Three: Application for Healing
Close your eyes gently and imagine your entire body. First, place your attention on the location of the unwanted feeling. Then, shift your attention to where your soul qualities are centered.
Now, invite these soul qualities to flow into the place of the unwanted feeling. Imagine them entering the tissues that hold the pain, gradually dissolving and replacing the pain. See the unwanted feeling fade away as the soul qualities shine through.
Self-inquiry: What did I notice in my heart, mind, and body during this reflection exercise?
Prayer: Dear God, I pray to know myself more deeply, and for peace and unity among all the many aspects of my being. Amen.
