Meetings with Remarkable People Part 1

You are invited to join us for this week’s Daily Reflections on “Meetings with Remarkable People.”

The movie, “Meetings with Remarkable Men,” is a biographical drama based on George Gurdjieff’s book by the same name. The story is about his search for truth as he journeys worldwide. On these travels, which began in the late 1800s, he met many people and learned many things. Along the way, Gurdjieff met with different teachers from whom he learned secrets about the universe, including the ancient wisdom of the Enneagram. The movie “Meetings with Remarkable Men” was released in the United States on August 5, 1979; Peter Brook directed it and stars Terence Stamp and Dragan Maksimović.

It occurs to me that we all have remarkable people in our lives. They open doors and windows to the world no one else could ever open. They are our teachers. If you portrayed all the influential teachers you have met in a movie, book, play, or piece of art, you would have a valuable work.

Who would be in your movie, “My Meetings with Remarkable People”?

From your childhood memories up until today, there have been those who have brought you into being. There have been those who have taught you about and exposed you to the magic and miracles of life. There have been those who were willing to accompany you into your depths and celebrate with you on your mountain tops.

These dear souls are the players in God’s unfolding story of your life. Let’s face it, without these remarkable persons you would not be who you are today. They were the guard rails, the open fields, and the ones who said YES when you most needed affirmation. They spoke to your essence and in so doing affirmed your innocent and unobscured self.

Remarkable people in our lives point the way to our spiritual growth. They come to us when we need their truth, perspective, and spiritual influence. They are further along than we are in specific areas, therefore they nurture higher thoughts and greater insights than we would have had on our own. And as we look over our lives, we see that these remarkable people worked in concert to bring you into being. Yes, though many perhaps didn’t know each other, their influences complemented each other and like a huge puzzle, fit together to help grow you.

Spiritual practice: Who have been your most significant teachers in the mental domain of your life — in your intellectual understanding of yourself, others, reality, and the universe? Who have been the remarkable teachers in your life in the emotional domain? Who have instructed you in the matters of the heart? Who has been a major teacher and influencer in the physical realm of your life? Who have been your spiritual guides? Just imagine vignettes of each of these dear souls in your movie, “My Meetings with Remarkable People.”

Self-inquiry: Why would it not be a waste of time to think about all those who brought you into being and how each of them did it?

Dear God,

I am so grateful for all those remarkable souls who show me light and love and point the way. On your name, Amen
