One of Queen Mary 2’s Three Anchors
The Little Things Part 6
The anchor of any seacraft is only a fraction of its weight. Yet, it is one of the most vital parts of any boat. Anchors stabilize and keep the craft in place so that changing tidal or weather conditions do not affect the vessel. All ships entering a port of call are required to have anchors.
Though a ship’s anchor is highly essential, it weighs only a fraction of its total weight. For example, the Queen Mary 2 weighs nearly 500,000 tons, and each of its anchors weighs 23 tons.
Being anchored is also a metaphor for a person’s spiritual stability. If spiritually anchored, we are less likely to drift into danger or chaos. So, what gives us stability? What is our anchor?
Laws and regulations anchor us to a set of behaviors designed to protect us from harm. However, such laws cannot regulate all personal behaviors and mental attitudes that are harmful. Religious, moral, and ethical systems attempt to regulate these, but they cannot control thoughts and behaviors or the damage they cause.
On the other hand, consciousness anchors us to our soul, which internally guides us. Consciousness is voluntary self-regulation. Consciousness makes us aware of who we are, our connection to all life, the ripple effect, and our unchecked ego’s self-centeredness.
In consciousness, we realize our susceptibility to the unchecked ego’s drive to fulfill its story, and with such awareness, our true nature gradually replaces that drive. So, it is the consciousness of truth that anchors us in reality and being — we no longer rely on the unchecked ego’s story and scripts. The anchor of Truth is the Divine.
Spiritual practice: Assess your spiritual stability. What is its anchor?
Self-inquiry: To what are you most anchored?
Dear God,
As my anchor, you are always there to stabilize me. You keep me afloat and you do not let me drift into chaos. All you ask of me is to drop the anchor and trust. I pray for the strength and faith to do this every day!
