Heaven-Sent Part 1
Welcome to this series of Daily Reflections on “Heaven-Sent.”
Something heaven-sent comes from a source of goodness beyond us. Often, it is an unexpected gift we hope for but may think impossible to actually receive. Then, seemingly out of the blue, it arrives—like a delivery from UPS (Upper Paradise Support). It is just what we ordered, and often even more.
This morning in a coffee shop, a kind young attendant passed by and asked with a big smile, “How are you, sir?” I replied, “Just fine, and how are you?”
He said, “No complaints. If I had any, it wouldn’t do me any good anyway,” and then he looked down.
I could tell he carried good and bad news. His good news was his warm and hospitable spirit. His bad news was the self-fulfilling belief that his needs and desires would never be met.
This young man has great potential; he is thoughtful, personable, and outgoing. But he seemed held back by a lie he told himself: “Asking for my heart’s desires will never work.” He had not yet learned to recognize heaven-sent gifts that were already being delivered to him.
I then looked him in those friendly eyes of his and said, “But we of like minds can change things.” Surprisingly, he said, “It is only through like minds that I will get there, sir.” With this comment I was surprised again—this time with more good news. He had hope, the most essential ingredient when discouraged, and he knew the power of community. He had nearly all the ingredients for an abundant life except for that one limiting belief that he would ever receive his heart’s desire.
Being many years his senior and having had some similar limiting thoughts myself when his age, I took “poetic license” and said, “My wish for you is that you find like-minded people who will honor you and hear your needs. They are there just waiting for you, I promise.” We smiled, and both went on with the day before us … with the life before us.
In reflecting on that encounter, I see that the young man and I were possibly heaven-sent to each other that morning.
Spiritual practice: What was the last thing you received that was heaven-sent? How did you respond? Journal your thoughts on how you receive gifts, the ones you asked for and those that come unasked.
Self-inquiry: How do like minds come to your aid?
Prayer:
Dear God, This young man reminded me how powerful the lies we believe about ourselves can be. I pray that he finds the people who will honor him, listen to him, and show him the many gifts You send from heaven. I know his people are waiting just like the people who waited for me. Amen.
