Peace Part 3
Inner or outer turmoil calls us to awaken to the serenity that’s already within us, but we cannot just automatically awaken. Today we will reflect on awakening to peacefulness.
Chaos, confusion, and fear can come in for the kill at any time. They take up residence in our minds, bodies, and hearts. None of us welcomes these feelings; yet too often, they overwhelm and consume us. Some of us let them dictate not only the course of a day, but the direction of our life.
But there is another way.
When we affirm and embody the words, “Divine order fills me with the peace of God,” we shift the entire atmosphere of our inner world. Living in the belief of that one truth, we can meet anything that comes our way, not with fear, but with spiritual strength.
Claiming divine order is a powerful act of surrender. It means letting go of the need to control everything and releasing the grip of our worries and fears. That is not easy, especially for those of us who are used to relying on our own reasoning and judgment, an approach that has usually worked. We automatically act, solve problems, and get the results we want.
But there are moments such as in serious illness, financial collapse, a loved one’s decisions, job loss, and the unpredictability of life where no matter how smart, strong, or strategic we are, we cannot control the outcome. This sends anger, fear, and trepidation.
When the uncontrollable strikes, our ego automatically jumps into action, just as it does for our everyday issues. But when the ego fails or cannot even make an attempt to solve the challenge, in the spiritually conscious life, we hear something different: “Claim and embody divine order.”
We may not see the Divine, but when we claim its truth, we awaken to its peace. Peace often arrives before circumstances change. Sometimes, things even get worse before they get better. And when they do, we may be tempted to revert back to the ego’s strategies. But divine order is always at work, quietly, faithfully, beneath the surface. It aligns all things, in time, with the will of God. But if our ego covers our eyes and puts us to sleep, we cannot sense divine order and we follow our own course. Yet in turmoil and fear, relinquishing the ego’s control and affirming divine order gives us deep peace.
This kind of trust is not a one-time decision. In seasons of great trial, we must surrender again and again. We may feel moments of peace, only to be shaken again by doubt. That is okay. The spiritual journey involves continual surrender, even when the results are not what we hoped for. It calls us to admit that we do not know the full story, that many times, the underlying Holy Plans are incomprehensible and therefore many of their outcomes are also incomprehensible. During such times, it is wise to have a trusted, spiritually grounded person to remind us of the truth.
Spiritual Practice: Identify someone you can speak with during times of fear or uncertainty; someone who will listen with wisdom and without judgment.
Self-Inquiry: What helps you release your ego and surrender to divine order?
Dear God, My heart draws near to You. I need Your presence. I long for Your deep, abiding peace. I pray to be aware of your order. Amen
