Peace Part 2

Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid," John 14:27.

The world cannot give the peace that Jesus was talking about because the world is like the ego; it cannot heal and give spiritual peace for matters of the heart like emotional suffering, rejection, abuse, cruelty, enslavement, estrangement, hatred, exclusion, and loss. The world may give us imitations of peace by offering comforts such as luxury, status, food, substances, activities, power, and all types of material and physical gratification. Still, these are irrelevant to a hurting heart. They are like pizza given to someone dying of thirst. Only water will quench the thirst for water. Only genuine love will restore our lost connection to it.

The hurting heart has been wounded by whatever assailed it. The wound can make us feel disconnected from love and the One True Source of Love. On its own, the heart cannot give itself the care that is called for. Nor can the ego or the egos of others.

In this type of hurt, the heart must have a supernatural connection that cannot be taken away… this connection is there all day and night and will not diminish when money runs out or when we are rejected, cast away, or powerless. The wounded heart needs consciousness of its unbreakable connection to the Divine. It needs continuous spiritual guidance and companionship from a Higher Power.

Our wounded heart needs assurance that we are not alone. This assurance is delivered by the felt presence of the Divine. Being alone without a connection to the divine, a reason to be, and an ability to receive and give love, is a living death. The fear of a living death steals our peace. Only the Divine is what we need when disconnected from peace. Without that relationship, it is easy to let our hearts be troubled and afraid.

Spiritual practice: What was it like to feel alone? Describe how you got out of that state.

Self-inquiry: What quenches your spiritual thirst?

Dear God, I invite you into my heart, far deeper and deeper into my spirit. I cannot get enough of your presence, your guidance, and the spiritual comfort of your presence. Amen
