The Present Moment and the Enneagram Part 5

I am writing this reflection in New Mexico, a state I have never before explored. Out in the country from Santa Fe, which is translated as Holy Faith, I’m journaling in the New Mexican sun.

In the stillness of this quiet land, I focus on this present moment and the terrain before me … the desert sand, the pines and cedars and the intensely blue sky. As I look straight ahead into the wilderness, a hummingbird flies in front of my face, looks at me and darts off just as quickly as it came. In the spiritual life, all present moment arisings are significant, so what does this hummingbird’s serendipitous visit mean to me?

The spirit of the hummingbird sent a greeting in this strange land … yes, a welcome to new revelations and new ways to experience the Divine. I am reminded that each day, like her visit, is brief, and must live in my heart if it is to last. With her sweet visit, I am reminded that I am connected to all life and, if I perceive it with my soul, all life will speak to me in its own way. I also have the pleasure of Holy Conversation with earth and heaven.

Spiritual Practice

Go into the outdoors. Sit quietly. What visits you, and what message does it bring to your soul?

Inquiry

As I breathe in, what is the spirit saying to me now? How will I respond?

Prayer

Dear God, Thank you for sending the hummingbird. The visit was all too brief. I must have scared it away by saying “Hi!” But I savor that visit and all it gave to me this day. Amen.
