People Who Lead Us to Our Soul’s Home Part 7

September 28, 2026

Some dear people have an unusually positive effect on me. Perhaps it is the hope they embody, the compassion in their eyes, or the generosity with which they listen and love. Whatever it is, I often leave their presence feeling lighter, steadier, and more deeply connected to what is good and true within me.

You may know people like this, too. They do not necessarily offer advice or say anything extraordinary. Something within them reaches something within us. Their presence reminds us of who we are—and quietly calls us home.

All of us have this kind of influence. Throughout the day, we reveal something of our inner life through our eyes, expressions, moods, gestures, words, silences, and tone of voice. Even the way we listen, enter a room, touch another person, or walk away communicates something. Whether we realize it or not, we are continually affecting the spiritual and emotional atmosphere around us.

Our clothing, jewelry, fragrance, and other outward choices may express aspects of our personality. But beneath these things—and beneath the personality itself—is the soul: our deepest and truest identity, born of the Divine and forever connected to it. When we are living close to our soul, something changes in our presence. Our personality does not disappear; it becomes a servant of something deeper—our essence. The ego no longer needs to control every encounter, protect every vulnerability, or prove its worth. It can step back and allow the soul to speak through our face, our voice, our choices, and our love.

Then compassion becomes more natural. Wisdom becomes less about having the right answers and more about seeing clearly. We become more conscious of our soul’s purpose and more responsive to the Divine movement within our lives.

This raises a searching question: When people have been in our presence, what have they encountered? Have they felt judged or welcomed? Diminished or strengthened? More anxious—or more hopeful? Have they felt pushed farther from themselves, or gently encouraged to live from their home?

You can see this even in the smallest encounters. Just recently, when out of town, we went to a new restaurant for lunch. A young man at the greeting stand seemed distracted. His first words were, “We do not have any tables. It will take some time to get someone to wipe off the next table.” Not exactly a hospitable welcome, but we were about to sit and wait when a smiling-faced server swiftly came from around the corner with two menus and said, “Hi! There is a table over here; I will clean it right now. Please come with me.” She looked us in our faces with her smile. Her manner made us feel right at home. She led us back to comfort, belonging, place, and warmth, all of which are qualities of the soul’s home. This dear young lady’s type of leading says “I see you have a need; I am here, and all will be well.” All this was reflected in her presence, attitude, external expression, and most of all, in her inner spirit.

We guide people toward their soul not only through what we teach or advise, but through what we embody wherever and whoever we are. The closer we live to our own soul, the more trustworthy our presence becomes. Our wisdom draws from a deeper well, and others may recognize in us something they know is also within themselves.

Spiritual Practice

Notice the external cues you may be giving others. In your next encounter, notice your tone, your grace, and your mood. What level of soul was coming through? Make a conscious decision to allow your soul to completely take over the encounter. How did you experience this relinquishment?

Inquiry

Write down some ways that you know that your spirit, your essence, shines forth.

Prayer

Dear God,

Create in me a transparency to my soul, that shines forth the love You placed in me at my making.

Amen
