Adaptation Part 9

When the GPS says, "Recalculating," it's in the process of adapting to our having deviated from the route it calculated. It guides us to where we want to go, but when we veer off course, it is programmed to recalculate a new way to our destination.

My father was in the food brokerage business and frequently modeled how to recalculate. As the broker, Dad ensured that commodities were delivered from the manufacturers to the grocery store chains.

But in one instance, there was a train wreck, and the trains that were scheduled couldn't be used. As a result, many train carloads of food and grocery items could not be delivered unless my father recalculated. Dad lined up a force of trucks for transportation, and everything arrived on time.

A hospital administrator, Mr. England, was known for facing crises with optimism. I recall being in a meeting with him once and the reports presented looked grim for the hospital. But his remark changed the entire atmosphere of the room. Mr. England said, “There’s more than one way to skin a cat.”

Human adaptation is a form of recalculation. For example, when we veer off course or we are detoured, we must reassess our lives, beliefs, and methodology before continuing. Likewise, in the spiritual life and consciousness, we constantly adapt to sudden changes and to the multitudes of new information we receive. In consciousness, we turn challenges into opportunities by being open to new concepts and methods of tapping into our creative energies.

Spiritual practice: What is another way to “skin the cat” for the dilemma that faces you now?

Self-inquiry: How have I adapted to sudden change?

Dear God,
Grant me the creative ability to be flexible and to come up with different ways to accomplish things. Please give me your gift of Holy Adaptation. I pray that the leaders of the world adapt to the new demands that now face the human family. Amen
