Application of Spiritual Wisdom Part 5

Many spiritual practices bring us closer to the Divine and to spiritual wisdom. One of my favorites is meditation. Some others are walking the labyrinth, consulting holy scripture, Lectio Divina, yoga, pilgrimage, dance, writing, music, practicing presence, mindfulness, embodiment, and various forms of prayer. However, none will be optimal unless we bring several things to the practice.

These practices do not require a particular intention. In doing the practice, maybe we just want to see what happens, or to feel the companionship of the Divine, or to create a landing space for divine wisdom. But in applying divine wisdom to a specific issue, we must bring our presence, our intention, our question, and the subject for which the spiritual wisdom is desired.

For example, if we are worried about someone who may be making poor choices, we can do a spiritual practice while simultaneously keeping that special person in our hearts. This practice gives us a divinely aligned approach to holding space for this person. In spiritual practices, we can apply divine wisdom to any problem, circumstance, or relationship. When we bring concerns and issues into the light and do our practice with them in our sacred space, we receive the necessary wisdom and address the problem.

There is another type of spiritual practice, taught by the spiritual teacher Emmet Fox. Called the Golden Key, its method directly applies divine wisdom to the problem. The following is Fox’s explanation of the Golden Key, which is also the title of his book on the subject.

“As for the actual working method, like all fundamental things, it is simplicity. All you have to do is this: Stop thinking about the difficulty, whatever it is, and think about God instead. This is the complete rule, and if you will do this, the trouble, whatever it is, will presently disappear. It makes no difference what kind of trouble it is. It may be a big thing or a little thing; it may concern health, finance, a lawsuit, a quarrel, an accident, or anything else conceivable; but whatever it is, stop thinking about it, and think of God instead; that is all you have to do. The thing could not be simpler, could it? God Himself could scarcely have made it simpler, and yet it never fails to work when given a fair trial.”

We can know many spiritual things, but if we do not apply spiritual wisdom to our circumstances and relationships, we deny ourselves the healing, wholeness, and spiritual consolations waiting to come our way.

Spiritual practice: What is an issue for which you need a solution? Try the Golden Key. Give it some time. Mark your calendar to check on what happened in the situation.

Self-inquiry: What is your need for which spiritual wisdom is called for?

Dear God, Grant me the time and space for your divine wisdom to land, and I pray that you show me how to put it to use. Amen
