Reflection Part 3

Some spiritual reflection can take the shape of reverie, a state of pleasant daydreaming during our waking hours. Reverie carries dream-like qualities, such as being lost in thought when time seems suspended. The operative word in the definition of reverie is “pleasant.” It is a gentle, uplifting state of consciousness because the mind, heart, and body experience something positive.

Within each of us lies a treasure trove of uplifting memories, dreams, hopes, and imaginings. When we recall, imagine, and savor these positive images, we can choose to enter reverie. Like all forms of spiritual reflection, reverie unfolds within a sacred intention and container.

During reverie, we might reflect on our last time with someone we love, the joy of passing a driving test, graduating from high school, or celebrating a marriage. We may remember a simple day when we felt at one with everything around us. Perhaps we will relive a time and place when we were blessed. We might picture a reunion with a long-lost friend or family member. Some reveries are sparkling memories of that which forever touch us— a loving word said by someone, a realization that we were falling in love, a gentle touch, a life-changing event, an embrace, a cherished time with dear friends…

Spiritual reverie also entertains experiences not yet lived, such as those things anticipated or hoped for. In this state, we watch an inner movie filled with what we are longing for ourselves or for others. The themes of our reveries are endless, and whether they are real memories or imagined, they are anchored in the heart where we access them through its reservoir of positive emotions.

Spiritual reverie is a form of reflection that nourishes both soul and psyche. It can recharge our spirit, deepen our love, energize our being, and even help to heal wounds and soothe pain. Reverie can serve as an antidote to depression and anxiety. Above all, it opens a pathway to joy within us, which is one of the most profound expressions of the Divine.

Spiritual practice (Guided Reverie):

Find a quiet place where you can sit undisturbed. Close your eyes and take a few gentle breaths, letting your body relax. Let the energy of Mother Earth come from the ground beneath you into your feet, and let the energy proceed upwards into your ankles, legs, and torso. Feel the relaxation in your arms, neck, and head as the energy rises. Now turn your attention to your heart. Become aware of the light within your heart that is attracting you inward. Let the light fill your entire body cell by cell.

Now, allow yourself to recall a golden memory. Perhaps a time of laughter, love, or deep peace with the surface. Let the memory unfold like a gentle movie in your mind’s eye. Notice how it feels in your heart and body. Enjoy the positive emotions.

If no memory arises, imagine a hopeful scene, such as something you long for, a dream you carry, or a reunion you would cherish. Allow yourself to linger there, receiving the warmth and joy it brings.

Stay in this reverie for as long as you wish. When you are ready, open your eyes slowly and carry the sweetness of this reflection with you.

To complete the exercise, journal your thoughts and your felt senses.

Self-inquiry: What are some reasons why you may need spiritual reverie as a spiritual practice?

Prayer: Dear God, I am grateful for the reveries of golden memories, imagined wonders, and sacred reunions of every kind. Amen.
