Consciousness and Prayer Part 2
Whether rich, poor, educated, uneducated, spiritually developed or not, all of us can be ruled by ego, even when we pray— and all of us have the potential to be governed by the soul and when this is true, our prayers come from our soul. In the New Testament book of Matthew, Jesus instructed us to go into our closet to pray, far away from those who would hear us. Jesus’s word “closet” is from the Greek “tameion” a storage chamber or secret room that is well-guarded. Jesus’s Aramaic word for the closet was “Tawanaah,” a room where valuables and supplies are stored, a room without windows. It is a metaphor for a place of solitude and spiritual reflection, free from distractions and public displays of piety.
So, those who have developed to the point of praying alone in their “closet” do not parade their spiritual lives so that others will admire them. Instead, these dear souls focus on growing in spirit and in connecting with the Divine.
Spiritual consciousness and its various levels of development are not a class system that ranks individuals on a “Spirituality Scale”. Instead of being on a ladder, with those at the top being the “best” in consciousness, spiritual development is more like a spiral that we climb upward and downward as we grow and regress. Hopefully, over our lifetimes, we advance, but not in a linear stepwise progression.
Yet the more we proceed in the circles of the spiral, the more spiritual insights, shock points, and realizations we experience, and the more spiritual consciousness we embody. Our prayers deepen in purpose and reflect our spiritual understandings. But more than any intellectual knowledge is our spiritual intention.
One way we can figure out our spiritual growth is to determine how well we are able to love from our ego type and, more importantly, our soul type. It is likely that a prayer made from the ego does not have the same intention as a prayer from the amalgamated ego and soul. It is likely that the less encumbered we are with our ego, the more able we are to love freely and deeply.
Spiritual practice: Our closet is synonymous with our inner sanctum. As a spiritual practice, go into a room without distractions, such as devices or potential interruptions. Once in the room, begin with meditation. After meditation, pray from your heart.
Self-reflection: Why would you ever go overboard in my praying?
Dear God,
You know the prayer on my heart right now. Amen
