Adaptation Part 3

The ego has a bad rap. We typically see it as something that trips us up, leads to narcissism and is hell-bent on getting its way. The ego is even known as our false self.

But in actuality, the ego is an essential part of our being. As the executive function of our being, it is a mental structure that negotiates a demanding, stressful, and sometimes confusing world. In egocentricity, we can be totally self-absorbed in our ego’s narrative and completely selfish; hence, we are in a false self. But when our ego is healthy, it is an authentic agent of our soul.

How does the ego adapt to the soul being the ship's captain instead of itself? This is the inner work of our being. The soul can be compared to an amoeba, a single-cell form of life that changes shape and consistency all the time. The soul changes shape according to outside circumstances that cause it to conglomerate, remain the same, or expand. The soul also changes according to how the ego cooperates with the soul's purpose or ignores it.

The ego has little incentive to adapt to the soul's purpose until it reaches a critical mass of suffering. In suffering, it turns to anything for relief, and if it chooses not to self-narcotize, it often turns to the soul, which is a repository for memories of bliss. When we reconnect to the bliss of our soul child, our suffering diminishes, and the soul and its central purpose emerge.

Therefore, amalgamation is the pivotal spiritual occurrence for the soul and the ego. In amalgamation, the healthy ego is no longer a separate entity that focuses on its narrative. Instead, it pours its energy into helping the soul express itself. This process changes us from egocentricity to soulcentricity and is a beautiful adaptation to reality.

Self-inquiry: Where are my ego and soul when considering the amalgamation process?

Dear God,
Thank you for my ego. Though it gives me a hard time when I am under stress, I appreciate it when it is conscious, healthy and in service to my soul's purpose. Therefore, I pray for my ego to relinquish more and more to my soul. Amen.
