Peace Part 8

The peace in our hearts comes from having enough love to melt away anything that threatens to disturb it. To live in that peace, we must continually fill our hearts with love, overflowing.

Why does love bring peace? There are many reasons, but the most fundamental is this: love is the very core of our being. It is the essence from which our soul was created. We are made of love, yet we live in a world where love often seems something to be won, fought for, protected, or sought after. In this world, love can be disguised, imitated, or even exploited. It can be insincere, thin, and superficial. But authentic love is our true nature. It is unique in every person, expressed in a way that no other soul has ever expressed or will ever express.

If we were not made of love, why would we recognize it, desire it, and long to share it? Love and peace are inseparable because our core self, which is love, is also naturally peaceful. Love is not war. Love is not aggression or taking what is not ours. Love is not any of the ego’s schemes to gain affection. Real love, and the peace it brings, lives in the heart.

If we pause and drop into our heart right now, we can feel the love that was placed there at our creation. It is a deep caring for others. It is affection. It is the desire to walk with others as companions along life’s path. Love is feeling the pain of others as our own and rejoicing in their joys. It is looking into another’s eyes and, without speaking a word, saying “Yes” to their spirit.

When we give and receive genuine love, peace flows into us and through us. In that way, we carry peace into the world.

Spiritual practice: Pause for a moment and drop into your heart. Can you feel your core of love?

Self-inquiry: What is it about love that makes you feel most alive?

Dear God, For so many years I believed love was outside of me, something I had to earn, gather, and protect. I did not know that we are made of love, and that it is everywhere if we choose to see it. Grant me the gift of sensing and embodying the love within and around me, until it is overflowing. Amen.
