Adaptation Part 7
Living in the now, impressions steer us in another direction from the one we had initially calculated. So, the spiritual ability to be flexible and to adapt in the now is essential. Lucia, a ten-year-old peasant girl in Portugal in the early 1900s, witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary each month for six months. No one, not even her family, believed in her stories of Mary appearing in the wheat fields. People, including her family, thought her to be an attention seeker.
But even when everyone turned their backs on her and demanded that she recant her story, Lucia became a strong young girl instead of the less intense "people pleaser" she had been. She adapted to her new circumstances by recalculating her purpose and beliefs, regardless of the sacrifices required.
The final apparition on October 13th, 1917, concluded with the spectacular "Miracle of the Sun" and was witnessed by over 70,000 people. Lucia's ability to reinvent herself according to her new beliefs and experiences stood the test of criticism. As a result, her new found strength made way for thousands worldwide to make a pilgrimage to that sacred spot. Many healings are recorded to have taken place then and now in Fatima, Portugal.
Spiritual practice: As you have grown in your spiritual practice, how would you say you have adapted your life to the understandings that have been revealed to you?
Self-inquiry: How sensitive am I to the need for adaptation when my spirit moves me in another direction?
Dear God,
I am in awe of Lucia and so thankful that in her, heaven met earth. Amen.
